It’s easy to make mistakes treating acne. Sometimes it will even make things worse.
Here is a short list of what the experts says is the most common mistakes. I know I have made them all.
Mistake No. 1: Not Trying an Acne Treatment Long Enough
Even if you can see quick results within a week, it will usually take between 6 and 12 weeks before you can see a more permanent improvement.
Acne is not an infection, it’s an inflammation and it can even get worse before it gets better.
In some cases, your skin might feel a bit irritated the first couple of weeks of treatment.
Mistake No. 2: Trying Too Many Products at Once
What happens when you add one product to another? That’s right, you don’t know!
Sometimes a combination of products can cause irritation of the skin, and things go from bad to worse.
Sometimes when you self-treat acne, you may accidentally distress their skin and make the acne lesions bigger. This can lead to pigment spots and scars.
Mistake No. 3: Over-Scrubbing or Over-Cleansing the Skin…
…Over-scrubbing the skin will often worsen the acne, as it compromises the skin’s protective barrier.
- Instead, gently wash with a cleanser to lessen inflammation.
- And use a mild exfoliation if you feel the need to scrub.
Acne is not from dirt, if it was you would have it on your feet!
- Don’t over-wash!
- Don’t over-scrub!
- Rinse off the cleanser thoroughly!
Mistake No. 4: Choosing the Wrong Products for Acne-Prone Skin
Certain ingredients in cosmetics, sunscreen, and some moisturizers are likely to clog pores.
Products containing oil can also clog pores and lead to breakouts.
Mistake No. 5: Popping and Picking at Pimples
It will prolong the healing time and I may lead to scars.
When popping and picking, bacteria can get pushed further into the skin…
…leading to more swelling and redness.
Don’t adopt “pimple popping” as your hobby!
This is by far the most common mistake of all, and the one that most often leaves scars.
DON’T DO IT!!
